You toss a flake of fish food into the slowly-moving water and watch it intently as it's torn to pieces by the countless, tiny fish living in the stream. They swarm around, eager for more - and are rewarded by a large helping of food, fetched from your small glass container. You hadn't actually meant to drop it all in at once, but you'd been startled by a surprised snort from behind you.
"Oh!" you exclaim, hastily pocketing your food and standing. "I didn't hear you... Did you come to see the fish? I was preoccupied, you startled me..." Slightly flustered, you stop your spurting words and examine the creature before you.
It's a purple, spiked equine at about your height. Its spikes, however, do not serve to make you cautious; in fact, this being has a playful air about it that relieves you quickly of any suspicious thoughts you may have had. Its mane and tail are green, and look extremely soft, unlike the coarse horse hair you're used to. Then, as it speaks, your eyes sweep back to its face.
"To look at the fish?" it replies with a questioning expression on its face. Then, after a confused moment, it laughs. "No, I come here to drink; I live here. Well, just over there, really," it says with a vague gesture behind it. Then it looks at the stream, squinting slightly. "I didn't know that water had fish in it. I've always thought it was a bit bitter."
You wince slightly when you realize how stupid your question must have seemed. Of course he hadn't come to look at the fish!
"Oh, there are lots of things that live in there," you say, anxious to seem knowledgeable about something. "You have to wait a while before they'll come out, though. Or you could just bring food," you say with a laugh, removing your container of flakes from your pocket once more.
He laughs, too, but it's a bit hollow; he's staring at the food with a slight frown. "They eat that?" he asks incredulously.
"Well, yeah," you say, yourself turning to look at the food. "When somebody feeds it to them, anyway."
"Huh," the equine replies in an unconvinced tone of voice. Then he turns to look behind him with a start, as if he's just realized something.
"Oops! Uh-oh..." he mutters, and you glance at him worriedly.
Catching your look, he says, "I promised another member of my circle I'd meet them the next meadow over, and I'm late." he grimaces a bit as he says this, and you wonder slightly what he'd meant. Circle? However, your wondering is cut short when you realize you're between him and his drink.
"Oh," you exclaim as you jump aside and watch him move to slurp up some of the stream. He's not a very tidy drinker, but you hardly notice; you've just caught him staring around for fish.
Then, as he straightens and turns, you realize something and hastily ask, "Bye the way, what can I call you?"
"I'm Jester," he says over his shoulder as he leaps away.
As he disappears behind some trees, you shout your own name, along with a good-bye, after him. Then, no longer in the mood for feeding the fish, you leave the area and head back home.
